The Surprising Potential of a Work At Home Career

Often when we think of a work at home job, we think of making calls, stuffing envelopes, data entry, or the website stores that are frequently touted in late night infomercials. For many people this is a satisfactory way to make an extra income, but is it possible to start and successfully run your own business by working at home? Don’t be surprised to find out that entrepreneurs all over the country are doing just that. The work at home economy is growing stronger every year. In fact, Forbes magazine says that 52% of all small businesses are home-based.

If you are thinking about starting your own business from home, you are not alone. Last year, Business For Home published an infographic which contained some impressive statistics about the strength of the work at home market in America. Their research revealed that there are 38 million home-based businesses in the U.S. The good news is that 70% of home-based businesses succeed within three years versus a 30% success rate for regular businesses. Almost half of the home-based businesses are started for less than $5000.

Perhaps most surprising is that they say 70% of Americans would prefer to be self-employed. If this is true, then why aren’t more people starting their own businesses? Why are they content to continue working for someone else and letting others benefit from the fruits of their labors? Working at home isn’t just for the stay-at-home moms or dads or the empty nesters any more. It is a valid lifestyle choice and can be just as emotionally and financially rewarding as being employed by someone else.

Corporate America itself is beginning to realize the value of the work-at-home culture. Virtual employees can continue being productive despite weather and road conditions that make travel to an office impossible, while still attending to their family’s needs. The technology available today with computers, mobile devices and Internet connections decreases the necessity for a physical workspace, especially in knowledge businesses where what you know is as important as what you do. The only difference with owning your own business is that you are responsible for your own actions, and the ultimate success or failure of meeting the goals you set for yourself.

What Kind of Work-At-Home Business Should You Start?

No matter what age you are, or what reasons you have for wanting to start a business, many people find that it is helpful to associate with an established company that already has proven procedures in place. This can help get their business up and running quickly and more efficiently, while taking some of the start-up uncertainties out of the equation.
